There are a number of locations to choose from when you are trying to ice dive – but none will compare to that of Antarctica. This is a magnificent place to visit and one of the coldest. Book your vacation months in advance through one of the many ice diving expeditions that are available.
Equipment
In order to have a good time and to explore the ice cold sea beneath you must bring with you the necessary equipment. This will include a dry and wet suit, mask, regulator, undergarments, and warm clothes to put on when you get out. All of these should be inspected before you dive to make sure that they are working probably.
What To Expect
If you have never been ice diving in Antarctica before than you are in for a real treat. There is shallow diving near or under the ice floes. These are around thirty feet deep. Shore diving is between thirty to sixty feet deep and is for the more experienced diver. When you are beneath the water you will be amazed by what you see. When the sunlight hit’s the water it creates a beautiful look and the ice formations are brilliant and have various shades.
Marine Life
The ice formations are not the only thing that you will look forward to. You will see a variety of marine life beneath the ice cold water. Expect to see horsetails, jelly fish, sea hedgehogs, sea snails, kelp walls, starfish, and Antarctic fish. In certain locations you will get the opportunity to see penguins, sea lions, krill, and leopard seals.
Tips
It is important to book your vacation in advance. You should also be aware that the itinerary you have set up might change depending on the weather and the condition of the ice. Certain bays might be closed off due to ice. While you are there you should also take advantage of the cruises and other activities that are available.
